You Inspire Me with John Templeton

Happy Sunday my favourite people…… Was pretty pumped to chat to this weeks Inspirational person, John Templeton, also known as JT to most people whom know him. This guy has all the energy in the world, things never seem to get him down for long and he’s just generally high on life! JT is an extremely good athlete and can be seen competing in some big Crossfit competitions – Australian and international.

Sit down and get comfy as you get to know him….

Describe yourself in one sentence I invest most of my time and money on things that make me happy and I believe that an amazing attitude will ensure a life worth living.

Many people admire your passion for fitness and desire to achieve greatness, so what is your secret JT, your motivation to get up and do what you do every day? This life is short and I know what I want. I sit down at the start of each year and map out my goals. Not just for that year but for life. I have things I want to achieve and until they are achieved then I won’t rest. I couldn’t imagine living a normal life, it doesn’t inspire me. I have a cool quote that I think about:

“The time will pass whether you are working towards your goals or not. The only difference is that at the end of one you get what you have always wanted.”

I love that! Very cool… and you are so right, life is extremely short, and so sad not to spend it doing what you love…So what kinds of things inspire you? And whom do you admire or find inspiration in? Arnold Schwarzenegger has helped a lot. He was a skinny boy born in Austria, moved to USA and became the worlds greatest bodybuilder, became an action movie star, then the governor of California and the whole time he didn’t take life too seriously. I don’t really admire what he has done, I admire his attitude and how he has done it. He’s definitely someone I admire also, and Im sure many others would be on the same page as us…

What or who was it that inspired you to start this journey you are on, to help others and to become the fitness guru you are today? Hmmmmmm, who motivated me to start…? Haha, probably my mum! 😛 I was in the military and my mum suggested I try the Physical Training Instructor (PTI) selection process. I passed the selection and went on to top my PTI course as top student with distinction. From there I became the NZ SAS PTI which really set me going down this path! I guess it’s been an organic effect from there.

Awesome so was there a wake up call for change or a ‘aha’ moment that made you realise you wanted to create a change in the world around you doing what you love?

I always have aha moments and I am always learning new things. 10 years ago there is no way I would have pictured myself where I am now. The more you learn and the wiser you become the more you realise how important it is to do something you love and to help others along the way.

My biggest aha moment however was when I was young and high on drugs, I talked to my dad on the phone and had this vision of the contrast between us. My dad is an absolute gentleman with rock solid morals, and I at that time I was a piece of sh*t. It was at that moment I knew I needed a change and so the next day I enlisted in the military.

Self Love, the key to success and belief, what would you say are the 3 things you love most about yourself

What would you say has been your biggest achievement, personal hurdle or a health challenge that you have had? How did you overcome it? How has it changed you, helped you to grow? I have had a few chronic injuries over the past 8 years which include two torn patellar tendons and a severe tearing of both adductor brevis muscles from the pubic bone. So to be able to train, compete and still win even through that has taught me that where there is a will there is a way. It all begins with attitude. I now know deep down that no matter how big or small the adversity is I will be able to deal with it. The difference will vary by degree, but the way to overcome it is the same.

What advice would you give to someone who is going through their own personal challenges, hardships or lacking self belief? What do you think has helped you when you have doubted your ability?

Honestly I might sound a little bit backwards right now but if you are facing hardship, personal challenges or lacking self belief it means that you have got some sort of expectation. If you have expectation there is potential for something to go wrong. My biggest advice is to not have any expectation. Once you remove that you will be freed and feel immediately happier.

Do you think that the mind plays a huge part in what you do, not just the body? If so how do you tackle both? The mind the body and the soul all play a part, it’s a three-way affair. I just give attention to the parts that need it the most. I use my intuition; I know if I’m putting too much effort into physical and not enough into spiritual or emotional. If you can find balance across all three you will feel amazing.

Do you have a favourite inspirational quote, mantra or affirmation? Haha, nope, I have hundreds and all become more important depending on the situation or how I am feeling, nothing stays the same. In fact that’s another quote:

“Change is the only constant”

What are your go to nutrition tips for performance in the gym? I eat with intuition as well, each day is different. Some days I crave meat, some days vegetables. I try and eat 30% fat, 30% protein and 30% carbs and avoid any refined carbs and processed foods.

Just eat REAL food whenever you get hungry!

Real food is definitely the way to go

– So have you also a favourite exercise and why is it your fav? It depends on the goal at the time. If it’s going to help me win then it is my favourite. Sorry, can’t answer this!
